This series of drawing is created based on “A Democracy Bumpkin”(民主阿草)—a song by Black List in the album of Song of Madness. Combing its style of folk, rock and rap, the lyrics of “A Democracy Bumpkin” depicts the socio-political background of Taiwan in the end of 80s’ where the society is in a transition from military dictatorship into democracy. With the desire of social change and the ongoing political unrest, student movements and protests started to burst in the street of Taipei.
Some of the drawing come from real photos of protesters, politicians and dissidents, while some others are purely fictional.

Woke up in this morning with a blue clear sky

歸陣散步來到西門町 took a walk to the down town

On my way, the military and the police were everywhere. They were carrying all kind of weapons and marching forward.

I came to the policeman and asked him if we’re attacking the mainland Chinese and staging wars?

The policeman smiled and said: ‘young man, don’t mess with politics.’

Some people are fighting over the street, go home in no time and stay out of trouble.

Or someone will put you behind the bars. You’ll see and you will have fun.
