Blind Chance

Ting-Tong, Chang presents you a disastrous road movie.

The project is titled Blind Chance: a bus is hired and covered with black curtains. Around 20-30 Polish will be invited to join the trip. No age, sex nationality requirements. In the circumstance of the destination untold, they are given black masks and cover their faces. In the total darkness, the trip begins: the bus starts its tour around the city. It follows an irregular route designed to confuse the passengers. During the travel, a recording starts to play—10 foreigners talk about their sweet dreams and nightmares in Poznan. Deprived from vision, the passengers participate the dreams by their sensibility: by sound, movements and vibration of the engine. The bus slowly drives out of the city and heads to the middle of nowhere—it stops in several different spots, chosen purely by random. Each spot, one passenger, chosen purely by random, will be took out of the bus and finds his/her own way home. The bus carries on its journey until all the passengers are emptied.

The journey ends when the recording finishes.

Open Studio

Moss Machine

Exploring the idea of ‘urban gathering,’ Ting-Tong collected mosses around the city during the two-week-residency in Manchester. After mixing with butter milk, sugar and corn syrup, the mosses became material for mass destruction. Meanwhile, a machine was created combining with found-objects such as fire-extinguishers, pipes, water tank and bicycle breaks.

In the open studio of Chinese Arts Centre, 20th-21st April, Ting-Tong will present you how the mosses are shot back to the urban environment.

Ting-Tong Chang

Ting-Tong Chang@Chinese Arts Centre
4 April – 17 April
Open Studio 20 & 21 April

Ting-Tong Chang is a Taiwanese, UK based artist who graduated with an MFA from Goldsmiths, London in 2011. Ting-Tong’s practice combines street art with more traditional elements of painting and sculpture. Ting-Tong often uses absurd objects or visual imagery as a method to open a dialogue about contemporary problems. These core issues include globalisation stimulated by developments in technology, blurred boundaries between nations, consumer culture, and ‘omniscient fear of terrorism’. For his residency here, Ting-Tong will be working with local street artists to explore the role of advertising, and how it plays on our beliefs and consumer desires. He will also be working on a new ‘sculptural device’ which plays around with the idea of upcycling street litter and degradable waste.

Plus Ting-Tong Chang and Chinese Arts Centre staff will be taking part in a one day event with Eastside Projects in Birmingham on Wednesday 11 April. For more information visit http://www.eastsideprojects.org/events/

DEMONSTRATION
12th April – 1st May 2012
Private View Thursday 19th May, 7 – 9pm
Guardian News & Media Gallery
Kings Place, 90 York Way, Kings Cross
London, N1 9AG
‘Art can create disturbance and protest, and protest can create art’ – Martin Argles, 2012
This exhibition deals with the art of protest, the need for as well as the effects of art in protest, curated by six Central Saint Martins Fine Art students. The exhibition is a culmination of a year of research into the relationship between art and activism with an aim to demonstrate the ways they work to inform one another.
A unique collection of archival images documenting the actions of people in protest spanning from 1968 until today are exhibited alongside works from both established and emerging artists including Bob & Roberta Smith, kennardphillips, John Goldschmidt, Noel Douglas, Rowan Durrant, Francesca Tossarelli, Ting Tong Chang, Ben Wilson, Jamie Wagg, Robert Greenwood, Leah Borromeo, King Mob, Shepherd Manyika, Cordelia Cembrowicz, Hanging Out Project, Marco Monterzino, James Cauty and Dr D. The artists’ works harness the energy and ideals of individual approaches to protest in art. In today’s current climate, it is necessary to add to the very relevant discussion regarding art in protest and to emphasise art’s potential in actualizing change in the ‘here and now’ of our times.
A series of events to coincide with the exhibition:
Thursday 26th April‘Our Live Experiment Is Worth More Than 3,000 Textbooks’ film screening and Q&A session with film director John Goldschmidt at The Kings Cross Social Club; 6.30pm – 8pm
Thursday 3rd May‘Discussing The Creative Resistance’ discussion panel with Dean Kenning, Noel Douglas, Leah Borromeo and vacuum cleaner at The Hub, 126 York way; 6.30 – 9.30pm
Perhaps art cannot change things, but it can change people who can create change and this is Our Demonstration.

24 – 27.11.2011
Festival Curator: Waldemar Tatarchuk
Collaboration: Grzegorz Borkowski, Paulina Kempisty

The European Performance Art Festival EPAF2011 will be held at the Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle for the sixth time. Each year the festival takes on a different form, hosting performance art artists from around the world. Each subsequent edition of the festival is an attempt to show trends and ways of evolution for this species of art, and to also show the creativity of these young artists. This year sixteen artists from twelve countries have been invited to participate. Ten of these artists were selected through the open EPAF program which is targeted at young artists. The keynote of this year’s edition is an attempt to capture the relationship between artists that make up the culture of the East and West. Meeting artists that are of the younger and middle generation, whose work was rooted on the outskirts of different cultures is an opportunity to create a common platform for dialogue and mutual inspiration. The confrontation of different artistic attitudes, is an inexhaustible source of reflection on the differences and similarities in not only art, but also the world.
The Chinese festival consists of four artists. Chen Jin, in addition to her artistic activity. She is also the curator of the OPEN festival for a continuous 12 years, initially starting in Beijing and now in Shanghai. Yingmei Duan, belonged to the legendary East Village artists, formed in Beijing in the 90s, forming independent avant-garde art. She studied performance art at the laboratory of Marina Abramovic in Braunshweigu. Another artist, He Chengyao is one of the first who undertook China’s problem with femininity and the naked body, she participated in the exhibition Global Feminism at the Brooklyn Museum in 2007. The fourth artist invited is Cui Tao, representing the young generation of performance artists in China.

The open program – open EPAF is strongly differentiated in terms of artists selected by the media. Viewers will have the opportunity to see performances based solely on the artist’s exploration of carnality, as well as those where the action is inextricably linked with technology.
During the festival, in addition to performances, block therpay will take place, including meetings and discussions with artists, with critics, and art historians, demonstrations and presentations of the video performance.
