Agent Schrader

Each city has its own duality, and New York has its own paradoxical contradiction.

I met agent Schrader at the Improv Class in Magnet Training Center. Schrader is a bald headed, middle age white male with odd Hip Hop outfit which made him look like a British National Front member in pink.

Agent Schrader’s high energy and boisterous nature reminded me of Dean Norris in the tv series Breaking Bad.

Agent Schrader represents the paradoxical New York city: I am amazed by New Yorker’s capacity of being extremely friendly and at the same time being ludicrously offensive.

I like the friendliness of this city. In here, everyone is your dude or bro, even you don’t even know each other.

Yet, underneath the pleasant atmosphere, agent Schrader likes to add some direct provocation in the sentence such as ‘go back to learn some English bro!’ or ‘is your name chin chong chin?’ which left you in astonishment.

Then he maintained ‘I’m just joking with you, dude.’

I never really understand the true meaning of this—is it out of some kind of unknown physical desire that driving Schrader to pick up a fight—or he simply likes the idea of being outrageous?

Subsequently, I called him a fat-ass white trash, and then said ‘I’m also joking, dude.’

At the moment, agent Schrader’s smile froze and gave me a kind of chilling look—the kind of look that normally follows a cheerful punch in the face.

That was one of the longest moments in my life, I realized the inavailability of physicality makes a person weak. In this occasion, you know you can’t win, both vocally and physically.

Finally, Agent Schrader burst out an uneasy laugh, shook my shoulder and said: ‘this is a funny guy, isn’t it?’  I laughed, too, out of my sincere happiness.

Until now, I still don’t get used to confrontation.
